Stress Profile
The Adrenocortex Stress Profile is a powerful and precise noninvasive salivary test that evaluates bioactive levels of the body’s important stress hormones, cortisol and DHEA. This profile serves as a critical tool for uncovering biochemical imbalances underlying anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, obesity, dysglycemia, and a host of other clinical conditions.
Varying amounts of DHEA and cortisol can profoundly affect an individual’s energy levels, emotional state, disease resistance, and general sense of well-being. This test is a good means of identifying factors that may be strongly contributing to various disorders, or setting the stage for serious health problems in the future.
Many of cortisol’s physiological actions are geared toward the mobilization of reserves. Considered one of the primary “stress hormones”, cortisol is released in large amounts in response to physical, physiological, and/or psychological stress. When stressors persist, this secretion of cortisol can be prolonged. Excess amounts of cortisol can adversely affect bone and muscle tissue, cardiovascular function, immune defense, thyroid function, weight control, sleep, glucose regulation, and aging. Over time, cortisol secretion may become impaired, resulting in an inability to respond to stress and conditions such as chronic fatigue, allergies, menstrual problems, and arthritis.
DHEA affects immune function, energy production, insulin sensitivity, thyroid function, protein synthesis, and many other functions. Imbalances of DHEA have been associated with conditions such as impaired immunity, depression, insulin resistance, cancer, panic disorder, obesity, Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease.
This is a salivary test, which has the distinct advantage of reflecting the unbound, bioavailable hormone. Customized therapeutic programs based on exercise, diet, stress reduction, and/or supplementation can be implemented, based on laboratory results.
